Do you need a sworn translation of a P60, P45, Self Assessment tax return, tax certificate or letter from a tax authority for use in Spain? I am Sergio Boix Mira, Spanish Sworn Translator of English No. 4473, appointed by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I translate tax documents written in English or Spanish, regardless of the country in which they were issued.
This page focuses on tax returns, tax certificates, tax residence documents and HMRC documentation. The translation faithfully reflects the source. It is not tax advice and does not determine tax obligations, tax residence, tax payable, required filings or tax consequences.

Tax and HMRC documents I can translate
Depending on the procedure, language and receiving organisation, a sworn translation may be requested for documents such as:
- UK P60 and P45 documents.
- Self Assessment tax returns and other tax returns.
- Tax calculations, tax summaries and tax-related income statements.
- Tax certificates and certificates of tax residence.
- HMRC letters, statements, notices and other communications.
- PAYE documentation and tax coding notices.
- Income tax documents.
- Spanish tax returns and certificates issued by the Spanish Tax Agency.
- Communications from tax authorities in the United States, Ireland, Canada, Australia or elsewhere when written in English or Spanish.
- Tax documents submitted to banks, lawyers, notaries, advisers or public authorities.
These examples do not mean that every document requires a sworn translation or that they are universal requirements. The receiving authority or organisation decides which documents and formats it accepts.
HMRC documents
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is the United Kingdom tax authority. In Spanish, it may be described functionally as the UK Tax Agency, without treating it as the exact legal equivalent of Spain’s AEAT.
I translate HMRC letters, notices, statements, tax calculations, tax summaries, certificates and other communications. Official names such as HMRC, Self Assessment and PAYE are retained where they are needed to identify the document accurately.
P60 sworn translations
A P60 summarises certain employment pay and tax information at the end of the UK tax year. It may include employer and employee details, pay, tax and other PAYE information.
The translation records the fields and figures in the source. It does not present the P60 as the exact equivalent of a Spanish income tax return, withholding certificate or other Spanish document, and it does not interpret its tax effect.
P45 sworn translations
A P45 is connected with the end of employment and contains PAYE tax information. It may be submitted within a tax, employment, banking, immigration or administrative file.
Where its main function is tax-related, this is the primary service category. Where it forms part of a file about a contract, payslip or professional experience, see the page for employment document sworn translations. A P45 is not automatically equivalent to a Spanish employer certificate, final settlement or other document.
Self Assessment and tax returns
Self Assessment is the official name of a UK tax return and self-assessment procedure, depending on context. I can translate the return, tax calculation and related communications while retaining the official name where appropriate.
I also translate tax returns, tax calculations, tax summaries and certificates from other countries when written in English or Spanish. My service is limited to sworn translation: I do not complete tax returns or advise on how to file them.
PAYE, tax coding notices and income documents
PAYE is an official term for the UK system used to deduct and collect income tax through employment. It may be retained with a functional explanation without forcing an exact Spanish legal equivalent.
Documents may contain tax codes, periods, income, deductions and employer details. I translate the information shown in the source without calculating tax or confirming whether a tax code or tax treatment is correct.
Certificates of tax residence and other tax certificates
I translate certificates of tax residence, tax-status certificates, tax-related income certificates and documents issued by tax authorities. They may be used to evidence residence, income or a stated tax position before a Spanish or overseas organisation.
The translation does not determine a person’s tax residence. That assessment belongs to the competent authority or tax adviser.
Spanish tax documents translated into English
I translate Spanish tax certificates, tax returns, income documents, certificates of tax residence and communications from the Agencia Tributaria or AEAT into English.
Each organisation and document is described according to its context, without assigning automatic legal equivalence to HMRC or another foreign authority. For use outside Spain, requirements should be checked with the receiving authority or institution, including accepted format and any additional formality.
Tax documents from other countries
The service is not limited to the United Kingdom. I translate tax documents written in English or Spanish and issued in Spain, the United States, Ireland, Canada, Australia or elsewhere. The country of issue affects terminology and procedure, but does not prevent you from requesting a quote.
Common uses
Depending on the case, a sworn translation of tax documents may be used for:
- Residence, visa or citizenship procedures.
- Evidence of income or tax residence.
- Banking, finance or rental procedures.
- Notarial or property transactions.
- Inheritance and court proceedings.
- Administrative procedures.
- Submission to advisers, lawyers, notaries or public authorities.
Not every procedure requires a sworn translation. For specific immigration files, see the pages for Spain’s Non-Lucrative Visa and Digital Nomad Visa.
How this differs from banking, employment and pensions
This page covers tax returns, tax certificates, HMRC, P60, P45, PAYE, Self Assessment and tax residence. For statements, balances, transactions and bank certificates, see banking and financial document translation.
Contracts, payslips, employer letters and evidence of professional experience mainly belong to employment documents. Pensions, benefits and social security are covered by pensions and social security document translation. A file may contain several categories, but each translation preserves its documentary context.
Sworn translation and tax advice
I provide sworn translation services. I do not advise on tax obligations, tax residence, tax payable, returns that must be filed or tax consequences. Those questions should be addressed to a tax adviser or the competent authority.
Apostille and legalisation
A sworn translation and an apostille or legalisation serve different purposes. Tax documents do not always need an apostille. The requirement depends on the document, country, procedure and receiving organisation. Check the specific requirements before commissioning the translation.
Confidentiality and sending documents
Tax documents often contain sensitive personal and financial information. They are treated confidentially and used to assess and complete the requested assignment. You may send a PDF, scan or clear photograph for quotation.
The file should clearly show every page, figure, stamp, signature and relevant annotation. The receiving organisation decides which format is valid for the final procedure.
How the service works
- Send the document: provide a legible copy by email or WhatsApp and, if known, state the country, intended recipient and purpose.
- Quote and timescale: I review the file and confirm price, expected date and delivery format.
- Sworn translation: I prepare a faithful translation and certification.
- Delivery: you receive the work in the agreed format. Urgent service may be available where length and availability permit.
