UK Marriage Certificate for a Spain Family Visa: Translation Guide

When applying for a Spain family visa, a UK marriage certificate may be requested to prove the family relationship. The exact documentation depends on the visa category and the Spanish consular office handling the application, so start with the official checklist for your case.

Check the visa checklist first

For family-of-a-Spanish-citizen applications, the Consulate General of Spain in London lists a marriage certificate issued by the competent civil registry among the documents requested from spouses. Its guidance also states that foreign certificates must be apostilled and, where applicable, accompanied by a sworn translation into Spanish.

This is practical information, not legal advice. The competent authority decides the requirements for each application.

Does a UK marriage certificate need a Hague Apostille?

Since the United Kingdom left the European Union, the EU public-documents simplification rules no longer apply to UK documents. The Spanish Consulate in London explains that British documents requiring legalisation for use before Spanish authorities must carry a Hague Apostille, issued by the authorities of the issuing country.

However, requirements can differ according to the particular procedure. Confirm the requirement with the visa checklist and the authority receiving the document before ordering any service.

When is a sworn translation needed?

Where the Spanish authority requires the certificate to be submitted in Spanish, the English-language document must be accompanied by a sworn translation into Spanish. The Consulate in London specifies that, for documents to be used in Spain, an English-to-Spanish translation should be carried out by a sworn translator-interpreter registered in Spain.

Recommended order of preparation

  1. Check the current checklist for your visa category and consular district.
  2. Obtain the original or certified marriage certificate requested by the authority.
  3. Arrange the Hague Apostille if the checklist requires it.
  4. Send the complete package—certificate, apostille and any attached pages—for a sworn translation assessment.
  5. Check document-age requirements before submitting your application.

Apostille and translation serve different purposes

An apostille authenticates the signature and capacity of the issuing authority. It does not translate the certificate. If both are required, supplying the full apostilled document to the sworn translator helps ensure that all relevant pages are covered.
