Sworn Translation of Medical Documents in Spain

Do you need a sworn English translation of a medical report, certificate or clinical record for use in Spain? I am Sergio Boix Mira, Spanish Sworn Translator of English No. 4473, appointed by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I translate medical documents written in English or Spanish, regardless of the country in which they were issued. I work directly with individuals, professionals and organisations in Spain and abroad.

The service is the faithful translation and certification of the document. I do not provide medical or legal advice, interpret diagnoses, or decide whether a report or test meets the requirements of a procedure.

Medical documents I can translate

Depending on the document and the procedure, a sworn translation may be required. Examples include:

  • Medical, hospital and specialist reports.
  • Medical and fitness certificates.
  • Clinical records, extracts and medical history summaries.
  • Hospital discharge summaries and letters from hospitals or medical centres.
  • Letters from GPs and outpatient clinics.
  • Test results, clinical analyses and laboratory reports.
  • Radiology, MRI, CT/scan and ultrasound reports.
  • Pathology, surgical, rehabilitation and physiotherapy reports.
  • Psychological or psychiatric reports, where relevant.
  • Medical documents relating to disability or incapacity, depending on context.
  • Documents for insurers, pensions, benefits, administrative or court proceedings.
  • Health documents accompanying residence or immigration applications.

This list gives examples of documents I can translate. It does not mean that every document needs a sworn translation or that these are universal requirements.

NHS, hospital and UK clinic documents

I can translate documents issued by the NHS, hospitals, GP practices, consultants and private clinics. NHS documents are a common source of medical paperwork, but the service is not limited to the UK or any particular institution.

Medical documents from the United States and other countries

I also translate hospital reports, doctors’ letters, diagnostic reports, discharge summaries and other medical documents issued in the United States or any other country, provided they are written in English or Spanish. The country of issue does not in itself limit the service.

Spanish medical documents translated into English

I translate reports from Spanish hospitals, medical certificates, specialist reports, clinical records and other health documents written in Spanish into English. These translations may be requested by overseas organisations, employers, insurers, healthcare providers or other institutions. If the translation will be used outside Spain, check the receiving authority’s requirements in advance.

Medical terminology and faithful translation

The translation preserves the meaning and terminology of the source document, including diagnoses, medical history, findings, assessments, treatment, prognosis and results. I do not simplify or clinically interpret its contents. Terms such as “disability” and “incapacity” are translated according to their documentary context; they do not always describe the same situation.

Apostille and legalisation

A sworn translation and an apostille or legalisation serve different purposes. Whether an additional formality is required depends on the document, country of issue, procedure and receiving authority. Not every medical document needs an apostille. Where required, the Apostille Convention of 5 October 1961 may apply. Consult the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance and the official Convention text, and confirm the requirements for your procedure.

Sending documents and confidentiality

You can send a PDF, scan or clear photograph so I can review the document and prepare a quote. Sending a copy for quotation does not determine the format that the authority will ultimately accept. Medical documents are treated as confidential and used to assess and complete the requested translation.

How the service works

  1. Send the document: share a legible copy by email or WhatsApp and, if you wish, say which organisation or procedure it is for.
  2. Receive a quote and timescale: I will confirm the price, format and expected delivery date before starting.
  3. Sworn translation: I prepare a faithful translation and its certification.
  4. Delivery: you receive the work in the agreed format. In some cases, urgent delivery may be available, including within 24 hours, depending on length and availability.

Frequently asked questions

Which medical documents can you translate?

Medical and hospital reports, certificates, clinical records, discharge summaries, healthcare professionals’ letters, test results, imaging reports and other documents written in English or Spanish.

Do you translate NHS documents?

Yes. I can translate documents from the NHS, hospitals, GP practices, consultants and private clinics. Whether the translation must be sworn depends on the receiving authority’s requirements.

Can you translate a US medical report for use in Spain?

Yes, if it is written in English or Spanish. Whether a sworn translation, apostille or other formality is required depends on the document and the receiving organisation’s instructions.

Can you translate Spanish medical documents into English?

Yes. I also translate reports and medical certificates written in Spanish for possible submission to organisations abroad. Check their requirements before commissioning the work.

Do all medical reports need a sworn translation?

Not necessarily. It depends on the procedure, the document’s language and the instructions of the organisation receiving it. Confirm the requirements directly with that authority.

Can you translate a complete clinical record?

Yes, I can assess full records or selected extracts. The quote and timescale depend on the length, legibility and format of the documents.

Do you translate specialists’ reports and doctors’ letters?

Yes. I can translate specialist reports, GP letters and clinic documents while preserving the source content.

Can you translate test results and analyses?

Yes. I translate laboratory and clinical test results, as well as radiology, ultrasound, CT and MRI reports, when they are written in English or Spanish.

Do medical documents need an apostille?

There is no single answer. It depends on the country, document, procedure and receiving authority. A sworn translation does not replace an apostille where one is required.

Can I send a PDF or photograph?

Yes, so I can review the document and prepare a quote, provided the text is legible. The receiving authority decides which format it will accept for the procedure.

Do you need the original document?

A legible copy is usually enough to assess the job. If the procedure requires an original, certified copy or another format, confirm that with the receiving authority.

How long does the translation take?

The timescale depends on length, legibility, complexity and volume. I will confirm an estimated delivery date after reviewing the documents.

Do you offer urgent translations?

In some cases an urgent delivery may be possible, including within 24 hours. I must first review the length, file quality and availability; this timescale does not apply to every job.

Can I use the translation for procedures in Spain?

The sworn translation is produced by a translator appointed by Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You should confirm the specific requirements and accepted documents with the organisation handling your procedure.

Can I submit the translation in another country?

That may be possible, but requirements vary by country and authority. Ask the receiving organisation in advance whether it requires any additional formality.

How do I request a quote?

Send a legible copy by email or WhatsApp. You can include the language and the organisation it is for.
