Sworn Translation of Inheritance & Probate Documents for Spain

I provide sworn translations into Spanish of inheritance, probate and will-related documents written in English, regardless of the country in which they were issued. I also translate Spanish inheritance and probate documents into English when required. The service is provided directly by Sergio Boix Mira, Spanish Sworn Translator-Interpreter of English No. 4473, appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I work online with clients in Spain and abroad.

Requirements depend on the authority, institution or professional handling the procedure. Send a clear copy for a quote and tell me where the translation will be presented.

Inheritance and probate documents I translate

An inheritance file may bring together documents from courts, probate registries, notaries, banks, land registries and public authorities. Depending on your instructions, I can prepare a quote for documents such as:

This is an indicative list; not every document is needed in every case. Foreign legal terms and documents do not automatically correspond to Spanish legal institutions. I translate the document in context and preserve the meaning of its original terminology.

Sworn translation of wills for Spain

A will written in English may need to be translated into Spanish for a notary, lawyer, court, registry, bank or another authority involved in a matter in Spain. The receiving professional or authority should confirm whether a sworn translation is required, which pages and accompanying documents to include, and any format or authentication requirements.

Whether a particular will needs translation depends on the procedure and the person or institution receiving it. A translation communicates the source document; it does not determine the will’s validity or replace legal advice about succession.

Grant of Probate and probate documents

A Grant of Probate, Letters of Administration, Letters of Administration with Will Annexed, probate orders and other documents issued by probate courts or registries may form part of an inheritance file for use in Spain. The terminology and process vary between jurisdictions. For example, GOV.UK describes the different outcomes of an application in England and Wales, including a Grant of Probate and Letters of Administration. These names should not be treated as automatic equivalents of Spanish legal instruments.

My translation follows the wording and function shown in the document. I do not convert a foreign document into a Spanish legal institution or assume that terms such as “executor”, “administrator” or “estate” have one fixed equivalent in every context.

Death certificates and supporting civil documents

An inheritance procedure may also involve death certificates, marriage certificates, birth certificates or other civil-status records. If you need a quote for civil certificates as part of the same file, see my sworn translation service for birth and marriage certificates in Spain.

Powers of Attorney for inheritance matters

Some inheritance procedures include a Power of Attorney authorising a representative to act in a particular matter. If your file contains one, see my sworn translation service for Powers of Attorney. The scope and formal requirements depend on the document and the procedure.

Property and bank documents in inheritance procedures

Supporting records may include Land Registry documents, property deeds, ownership documents, bank statements, account certificates or financial records relating to the estate. Tax and notarial documents may also form part of the file. The receiving institution can confirm which records it requires; this page is focused on inheritance and probate documents rather than general banking translation.

Inheritance documents issued in other countries

I translate inheritance and probate documents written in English regardless of the country in which they were issued. Documents may come from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, India, Nigeria, South Africa or another jurisdiction. These are examples, not limits on the service. The source country and, where relevant, state or territory help me assess the document and prepare an accurate quote.

Spanish inheritance documents translated into English

When required, I also translate Spanish inheritance documents into English. These may include Spanish wills, notarial inheritance deeds, inheritance acceptance or partition documents, death-related records, civil certificates, notarial records and court documents.

Requirements for a translation used outside Spain depend on the authority, institution or professional receiving it. Please check whether a sworn translation, a particular format or any additional formality is required before ordering.

Do inheritance documents need an apostille?

There is no single answer for every inheritance file. The requirement may depend on the country of issue, the document, its purpose, the procedure and the receiving authority. An apostille or other legalisation concerns the formal origin of certain public documents; it is separate from a sworn translation. An apostille does not certify that the document’s contents are accurate or decide its legal effect. Check the requirements with the authority or professional receiving your documents.

You can read the Hague Apostille Convention and the Spanish Ministry’s information on sworn translators and official translations.

Sending documents for a quote

You can send a clear PDF, scan or digital copy of all relevant pages, including annexes, stamps and any apostille already attached. A digital copy is suitable for an initial quote; the receiving authority may have separate rules about originals, certified copies or the format in which the final translation must be submitted.

How it works

  1. Send your documents. Send a clear PDF or scan of all relevant pages and tell me which authority or procedure they are for.
  2. Receive your quote. I review the documents and confirm the price, delivery time and required format before work begins.
  3. Receive your sworn translation. I deliver the completed translation in the agreed format.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sworn translation of a will for Spain?

A sworn translation may be required, depending on the procedure and the authority or professional receiving the will. Confirm the requirement and the documents to include with them.

Can you translate a Grant of Probate into Spanish?

Yes. I can prepare a quote for a Grant of Probate and its supporting documents. The translation will reflect the source document’s terminology and context rather than treating it as an automatic equivalent of a Spanish instrument.

Can you translate Letters of Administration into Spanish?

Yes. Send the complete document and tell me where it will be presented. The appropriate translation and any formalities depend on its jurisdiction, purpose and recipient.

Can you translate inheritance documents issued outside the UK?

Yes. I translate relevant documents written in English regardless of their country of issue. Documents from the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland and other jurisdictions are within the service; the country of issue is not a restriction.

Can you translate US probate documents into Spanish?

Yes. US probate terminology and procedures can vary by state, so send the full document and identify the state and receiving authority where possible. I will review it before confirming the quote.

Can you translate a Spanish will into English?

Yes, when an English translation is required. Whether the receiving organisation accepts a Spanish sworn translation, or requires another format or formality, is for that organisation to confirm.

Do inheritance documents need an apostille?

Not always. It depends on the country, document, procedure and receiving authority. An apostille and a sworn translation have different functions, so check the requirements with the recipient.

Can I send the documents as PDFs?

Yes. A clear PDF or scan is suitable for requesting a quote. The receiving authority may have its own rules for the final submission, originals or certified copies.

How long does an inheritance document translation take?

Timing depends on the number of pages, legibility, terminology and any formatting requirements. I will confirm the delivery time with the quote after reviewing the documents.
